2012 Cupcake Vineyards Red Velvet

Cupcake Red Velvet, Red wine, wine, red velvet

This weeks wine is a 2012 Cupcake Vineyards Red Velvet.

Cupcake is always a pretty safe bet for an affordable wine, but this Red Velvet hits a perfect note. You pay about $11.00 a bottle and get a smooth almost creamy deep flavored red wine. Don’t let the name fool you, this is not an overly sweet wine. Rather, it is an easy to drink blend of Zinfandel, Merlot, and Petite Sirah. For taste-to-cost ratio I would say, buy a case. Cheers!

January 27 is National Chocolate Cake Day

www.funlava.com

So, today is obviously the best day ever! Who has a kick-ass chocolate cake recipe!?

Foodimentary - National Food Holidays

Here are today’s five thing to know about Chocolate Cake:

  1. The first French word for chocolate mousse translates in English “chocolate mayonnaise”
  2. The “blood” that you see in infamous “shower scene” in Psycho is actually chocolate syrup.
  3. The history of chocolate cake goes back to 1764, when Dr. James Baker discovered how to make chocolate by grinding cocoa beans between two massive circular millstones.
  4. A process for making silkier and smoother chocolate called conching was developed in 1879 by Swiss Rodolphe and made it easier to bake with chocolate as it amalgamates smoothly and completely with cake batters.
  5. In the U.S.A, “chocolate decadence” cakes were popular in the 1980s; in the 1990s, single-serving molten chocolate cakes with liquid chocolate centers and infused chocolates with exotic flavors such as tea, curry, red pepper, passion fruit, and champagne were popular.

Today’s Quote: “All you need is love. But a little chocolate…

My Cat Pees on the Dog’s Bed

dog bed, dog, cat pee solution

If you’re like me, then you’re lucky enough to be a blended household in which dog and a cat reside together! Though whether your canine and feline are best friends, sworn enemies, or even frenemies, like my two, there are bound to be some issues.

One super gross, irritating, expensive and frustrating issue is when your sweet little kitty pees all over the unsuspecting dog’s bed! To be fair, the dog may have done something to deserve it. Who knows, I don’t judge. Nonetheless, neither of my furry companions have the desire or opposable thumbs to clean up this mess. If yours do, then stop reading this and call TLC. You have a reality show on your hands. But for us typical pet owners how can we stop this from happening?

Meiomi Pinot Noir, 2013 Vintage

Meiomi Pinot Noir

This weeks wine is a 2013 Vintage Meiomi Pinot Noir, vinted and bottled by Meiomi Wines, St. Helena California.

This wine is around $19.99. A Pinot Noir that boast a blend of three coastal California growing regions: Monterey, Sonoma and Santa Barbara counties. This is a smooth, full bodied red that is easy to drink. It has a hint of of plum and berry with a nice spicy oak finish that balances it out. It’s a perfect wine to bundle-up under the covers with on a cold winter day, which just so happens to be what I’m doing with my glass right now. Cheers!

New Year’s Resolution

It has been ages since I’ve posted regularly and so many incredible things happened in 2014! The biggest of which was that I got married (finally)!

So, I resolve to post regularly again this year.  I will dive back in by posting some of the fun projects we did around the apartment in 2014 and share some cool solutions we found.

I will also show how we put together our wedding in New York City on a budget! This goes against my character, but I will pull back the financial curtain and really show the numbers. This was something I was really looking for when planning the wedding and no one really seemed to go there. So, I figured, I will.

Here’s to a more productive 2015!

Easy and Delicious Mid-week Meal!

IMG_9395

Herb and Garlic Roast Tenderloin

If you’re like me sometimes during the week the last thing you want to do is deal with dinner. Most of the time I end up on the couch with a glass of wine hoping dinner will just magically appear before me. Sometime with the help of the grubhub.com this works out great.

Other nights though, I feel the need to cook us a dinner like actual adults. I want it to be delicious, not super time consuming, oh and DELICIOUS. However, I’m not one of those people that can throw a bunch of stuff from my cabinets in a pot and have it turn out like I just channeled the ghost of Julia Childs. I need a recipe damn it!

2012 First Blog Ever In Review

The WordPress.com stats helper monkeys prepared a 2012 annual report for this blog. I could have done a lot better, but hey, I could have done a lot worse. The big move slowed down my post, but one of my new years resolutions it to get back to posting every week! Thanks for the reading!

Here’s an excerpt:

600 people reached the top of Mt. Everest in 2012. This blog got about 9,800 views in 2012. If every person who reached the top of Mt. Everest viewed this blog, it would have taken 16 years to get that many views.

Things I Like: Magnolia Springs Bed & Breakfast

bed and breakfast, b&b, travel, hotel, south, Alabama, Magnolia Springs

photo from magnoliasprings.com

I grew up in the South, living in Alabama for several years and attending college in the state. Of course I come back at least once or twice a year to visit family and friends. Last Christmas when Justin and I were headed down for the holidays we decided to stay in a hotel rather than the already full family home. This was partly due to the fact that my grandfather wasn’t really comfortable with us sleeping at his house but also so we could have our own private space. But, it was the holidays and a hotel felt so impersonal.

Things I Like: Auntie Liana’s Baked With Love

baked good, cake, cake balls, sweets, bakery

Auntie Liana’s

I was just at the Hudson Valley Wine and Food Festival and had the BEST cake balls! They were from Auntie Liana’s! The flavors were amazing, the texture was perfect, and the sweetness level was just where you want it! If you have the chance to get a hold of these, order a dozen and mix up the selection, you won’t be sorry. So far I’m in love with the coconut but the red velvet cake is coming pretty close!

Hanging Bookshelves to Even Out a Recessed Wall

So we’ve been in our new apartment for a few months now and still have things that need a home! Part of the problem is that the living room has a multi-level wall. It has one part that sticks out and a larger area that’s recessed in. This is the wall our couch is on and it drives us crazy.

We’ve been thinking of what to do in that space since we looked at the apartment and then it hit us!
